KPWT Press Release Day 4
SANTA CRUZ OCEAN SPIRIT WAVE MASTERS 2009
WAVE MASTERS
23th July /2nd August
Press release- 27th July 2009
Welcome to the KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Grand Slam!
Yes! A day with great conditions! Skipper’s meeting was called at 11am and all the riders looked excited about the chance to have some fun on the water and complete the single elimination!
Wind was good and increasing throughout the day, swell size was great and building all day reaching 3 meters with some big faces to work with!
Competition started in front of the main judge tower, directly in front of the main beach area at 13h45. The spectators on the beach, who came to see the World Champions compete, looked to be enjoying every bit of the competition. The second round heats for men needed to be completed before the women got their chance to show what they are made of.
And boy did they have some work to do throughout the day as the swell got bigger and bigger.
The first semi final between Abel Lago (SPA, RRD) and Will Bennet (UK, CABRINHA), who rode strapless, was a great show, with both riders performing some big turns, both top and bottom and cracking the lip with everything they have!
Abel progressed to the final to face the young superstar Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA) who had an exciting heat against Jan Marcos Riveras (DOM REP, STARKITES) in front of the 15 000 spectators who had now been drawn to the shoreline to witness the spectacle, which was today KITESURFING!
Carlos Delicado: “I think that was one of the best heats I have ever seen in my life!”
Unfortunately for Jan Marcos, he injured his knee during the heat and cannot compete any further today.
In the women’s heats, Kari Schibevaag (NOR, OZONE) faced Kirsty Jones (UK, FLEXIFOIL) who both looked excited to take on the big conditions this afternoon!
Kari: “Wow, it is actually quite scary out there, but what a super competition!”
The final was set and Jesse Richman rose to the occasion showing absolutely no fear for the big waves! Abel had a tough time when his lines crossed and had to re-launch his kite on the beach.
So the winner for the men’s Ocean Spirit Wave Masters single elimination 2009 was Jesse Richman and the women’s, Kirsty Jones!
At 7pm it was time to take advantage of the conditions and run the double elimination rounds. They were not completed but we managed to get through a few rounds which can hopefully be completed tomorrow if conditions permit.

THE 2009 FUERTEVENTURA PWA GRAND SLAM
Day 6: Estredo and Offringa take the honors as the first day of freestyle action is underway.
Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic/North Sails/MFC) and Sarah Quita Offringa (Starboard/NeilPryde) start their campaign with a perfect run, as they take the lead in the first single elimination. After two outstanding performances, the reigning World Champions start as they mean to go on.
The 30-knot offshore winds funneled over the dunes at Sotavento beach, creating the ultimate freestyle conditions for the pros. The flat water was broken up by the occasional wave, as an incredible display of power-freestyle stole the show. The grand stand was full throughout the contest, as the crowd withstood the sand and wind to catch a glimpse of the world’s best freestylers in action.
The men’s fleet, culminated in an outstanding final between Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic/North Sails/MFC) and Marcillo Browne (Fanatic/North Sails), who went head to head in the first single elimination. Both sailors had been fantastic, passing the excellent Kenneth Danielsen (RRD/Simmer Style/MFC) and Ian Mouro Lemos (JP/NeilPryde), amongst others, on the way to the ultimate heat.
The final was a clear demonstration of intentions: Estredo showing he was the man to beat, and Browne making it clear that he was going to give everything. Having enjoyed success for so long, Gollito sailed with confidence, which somehow made his sailing seem leagues ahead of his competitors. He nailed an incredible combination of a shaka, and air flaka and his trademark one-handed ponch, whilst Browne tried to push too hard, and fell on his opening moves. He soon recovered to nail an impressive air chacho, and one handed air funnel. In the end, Estredo proved too much, and took his first win at this Fuerteventura contest.
Tonky Frans (F2/Gaastra) stole the show in the semi final, with his massive moves getting the crowd to their feet. Frans was the first sailor to land a pushloop off the tiny waves, as well as his amazing new move – the forward-flaka. Against Frans, the number two in the World, Kiri Thode (Starboard/Gaastra) at times looked amazing, but he never rose to the heights that we saw in Lanzarote. His heat was crowned with a super smooth switch-spock 900. After a great performance by both sailors, Frans took the edge, and finished the single elimination in third place.
The highlights through the earlier stages came in the form of Andre Paskowski (Fanatic/North Sails), Norman Günzlein (JP/NeilPryde), Leo Ray (Naish/Naish) and Steven Van Broeckhoven (F2/MauiSails) who were all excellent in the single. Paskowski in particular had a very tight battle with Yegor Popretinskiy (JP/NeilPryde/MFC), whose aggressive sailing style has made him stand out in the pre-event warm up sessions.Eventually Paskowski’s consistency and powerful style was enough to let him clinch the win.
Quincy Offringa (Starboard/Severne) also looked very strong, smashing out powerful ponches just inches from the beach, whilst the new face Jakub Kosmowski (RRD/Simmer Style/Dakine) had a brilliant run until he came to face Estredo. The young Polish talent was very impressive today, passing Levi Lenz (Dakine) early on, and sailing brilliantly against the World Champion, unlucky not to have the variation to beat Estredo.
The early rounds of the double elimination were also completed, where a great performance by Björn Saragoza (Starboard/Hot Sails Maui) boosted him through the rounds until he came against Offringa. Phillip Soltysiak (Starboard/Dakine) Sailed well this morning, but was unlucky to come against Thode in an early heat of the single elimination. He put in a good performance in the double, and will be looking to climb even further up the rankings tomorrow.
Taty Frans (Starboard/MauiSails), Andraz Zan (RRD/Loft Sails) and Davy Scheffers (Tabou/Gaastra) were the standout performers in the double elimination so far, and after a poor start to the day, they will be thrilled to have sailed excellently and into the top eight. The young Scheffers was particularly impressive, and has such has been given with the coveted PWA Sailor of the day award.
The conditions here at Fuerteventura continue to provide an epic show ground for the world’s best, allowing them to compete boldly in front of their adoring spectators. With yet more wind forecast tomorrow, we are sure to have another spectacle on our hands, as the reigning title holders’ fight to retain their glory.

PWA FUERTE: Day 1
Single was not good but in double I was ripping full power. I lost against Davy Sheffers for 1 move inside and I could be sailor of the day. Anyway I am happy and I hope it will be like this or better in the next few days. Check the photos

Flat water in France
This last weekend, Ignasi (windsurfer.es) and I decided to search the wind around the coast.
Our searching brought us to another country... The baguette and croissant's country. Our objective was Leucate in the south of France, where you can find strong winds in Winter.
but enough and warm to enjoy our RRD Freestyle Wave 100L in flat water!

The 2009 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam - FINIAN GOT SECOND!!!
Official PWA release
Day 5: Congratulations to Antoine Albeau, Finian Maynard and Kevin Pritchard, who reap the glory from the 2009 Fuerteventura Grand Slam.
Antoine Albeau (JP/NeilPryde) has done it again, winning the 2009 Fuerteventura Slalom Event by a convincing margin. He now moves even clearer ahead of his competition in his quest for the PWA Overall Title. Finian Maynard (RRD/NeilPryde) and Kevin Pritchard (Starboard/Gaastra/Dakine) complete the podium after fantastic performances.
A calm morning gave way to a gusty afternoon here on Sotavento beach today, as the PWA race crew tried to complete another round of slalom. After an epic display throughout the week, tensions were running high as sailors battled for their final rankings. Unfortunately, there was not enough wind to complete a round today, leaving yesterday’s results standing firm.
Winning the event after yet another world-class performance, the incredible Antoine Albeau (JP/NeilPryde) has proved to the world that he is the number one. After his fourth event win of the year, it is almost certain that this incredible athlete will win the 2009 PWA Overall World Title. Results such as these suggest that the Frenchman may have had it easy; but nothing could be further from the truth. Albeau has fought hard and dug deep for his victory here, and nothing can be taken away from his outstanding achievement. Congratulations Antoine.
Finian Maynard (RRD/NeilPryde) will be thrilled with his second place ranking, after a long, hard fight with Kevin Pritchard (Starboard/Gaastra/Dakine). Maynard’s speed has never been in question – he is one of the sailors who never fails to impress, as he blasts off the start line into clear water, somehow controlling his equipment in the extreme conditions. However, his consistency has sometimes been overlooked, and has let him down in the past. It is clear that he has put this problem behind him, after a fantastic event boosts him to second overall in the World Rankings!!
The second podium in as many weeks for Kevin Pritchard (Starboard/Gaastra/Dakine) was all in a day’s work for the ex-World Champ, who never fails to impress with his unflinching consistency. Throughout the week, Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard/North Sails), Ross Williams (Tabou/Gaastra) and Micah Buzianis (JP/NeilPryde) put Pritchard to the test, yet his mental strength and well-honed skills were enough to secure him the valuable third place position.
Praise must go to the main challengers Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard/North Sails), Micah Buzianis (JP/NeilPryde) and Ross Williams (Tabou/Gaastra), who fought until the end in pursuit of the top three. Each of these contestants only missed the elite Winner’s final once, and they were always in amongst the faces at the front of the fleet.
The exciting power-sailors in the fleet Bjorn Dunkerbeck (F2/Severne), Peter Volwater (F2/MauiSails), Josh Angulo (Angulo/MauiSails/Dakine) and Patrick Diethelm (F2/North Sails) amazed the crowd throughout the week with their overtaking ability and their gybe-mark aggression. These sailors were a pleasure to watch, especially in the super-high-wind conditions, when they would blast through the ranks and dominate their races.
Arnon Dagan (Tabou/Gaastra), Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet/Simmer Style), Sylvain Moussilmani (Starboard/Simmer Style) and Benoit Moussilmani (Starboard/Simmer Style) were never far behind the action, and all four enjoyed moments of brilliance here. After two weeks of intense slalom, Dagan has worn a hole in his foot down to the bone, his physical scars showing the pressure that has been felt by everyone.
Great individual performances by Robby Swift (JP/NeilPryde), Diony Guadagnino (AHD/Hot Sails Maui/MFC), Jesper Orth (Starboard/Severne) Matt Pearch (Fanatic/North Sails) and Alberto Menegatti (Starboard/Simmer Style) will give them a boost ahead of Turkey, while Jimmy Diaz (Starboard/North Sails) will look to improve to maintain his solid overall ranking.
After a week of breathtaking action, we now look ahead to the opening round of freestyle that will start at 10.30 tomorrow. The promise of five more days of incredible windsurfing will please the crowds here, as we prepare for the penultimate event in the men’s freestyle tour, and the final event for the women.

The Kiel Week Ocean Jump 2009
Like every year there were lots of highlights on the water and on the stages of the Kiel Week. Certainly, there was only one event right in the city centre which was one-of-a-kind. It's the fourth time now windskaters and bikers met each other in this extraordinary competition: The competitors have to jump over an 80 square meter big ramp to land in the water of the Germania-harbor. In the air time it must be enough time to show some hardcore stunts and unbelievable tricks. For the crowd it is really amazing to see the big names of biking and windsurfing in action just a few meters away.
In the last four years this sporting highlight has become so huge that the Kiel Week Ocean Jump will be an official world cup this year. Many athletes from very different countries have registered to push this event to a new level. In the last years the competitors created new jumps and stunts which have been recorded on DVD. We expect at least the same this year. With more than 100.000 spectators at all event days the Terra Oceanis Publishing Company as the presenter has made one's mark. The Kiel Week Ocean Jump has become an inherent part of the Kiel Week which awakes big interest on the media and of course also on the spectators.
RRD international rider Flo Jung (RRD/Gun) and national rider Chris Oeser (RRD/Hotsails Maui) tried there best on this event. Each rider showed 4 jumps in the qualifying and the best 8 riders should make their way to the final. Chris Showing one handed ponch and tabletop forward, but unfortunately lost 2 times his board during shaka and ponch. And so he didn't make it to through the finals. Flo did much better, even in the final… Showing double frontloops (even clewfirst), air chachoos and back-to-the-sail frontloops. In the end it was a tough battle between Alex Lehmann and Flo for the title. Alex showed some great moves, too and with the advantage of an local rider he took the crown and Flo became second…
Great show even on the nigh-Session-Show-jumping…
All in all it was a really amazing event, and I'm pretty looking forward to next year…
Cheers Chris
Then there is an youtube video with some aktion and mostly bails ;)
I also attacht some pics of me an Flo.
cheers Chris

Seb Garat: PKRA Fuerte Report
Pretty hardcore conditions for this 2nd PKRa event in Canarias, Fuerteventura.
Wind already blowed pretty strong for the 1st day of competition. Between 35 and 40 knots, with gusts over 40… And wind very very gusty… as usual on this spot.
With no doubt, it’s the most difficult event of the Tour.
18 July:
1st good surprise for the first day. I’ve got nobody in the first round, since there’s only 26 riders registered. So I go directly in the 2nd round against one of the other French guy, «Thomas Paris». Even if I’m pretty confident in my riding, I failed a lot of tricks. I’ve got trouble in feeling this strong wind, and the gusts. At the end, I win this heat and go to the ¼ final against Youri Zoon. The competition ends for the day.
19 July:
When we have the skippers meeting, the wind is already very strong. So I pumped my 7, which is the smallest kite I took with me. I start to think that I should have a smaller one for this kind of conditions. All the others riders are on 5.5 or 6.
I still have pretty much trouble and can’t be consistent and land my tricks. I crashed a lot again, but this time, the Dutch guy takes the advantage. So I stopped in ¼ final of this single elimination. I will have to wait the double elimination and try to win some places.
Langeree won the single against Zoon in final, and Hadlow 3rd.
End of this 2nd day of competition.
20 July:
Starting of the double elimination. For this 3rd day, the wind is not that strong (as forecasted) when the first heat are done. I’ve a little bit of time before my round, since I won some places in the single. I look at some heats and the conditions look easier compared to first days of competitions.
I wait to know against who I’m gonna ride, and like I guessed, it’s against Cesar Portas that I will have to run. To try to keep my 7th place.
All the riders are out with bigger kites, so I pumped my 9. But less that ½ an hour before my heat, the wind increase progressively. So I prefer to prepare my 7 as well. And at the end, the wind didn’t stop to pick up, and I had to go against Cesar on my 7, pretty well powered!
I was really motivated, but still crashed several tricks in the beginning, and I see my opponent doing the same. I landed one Blind Judge, one Back Mobe, one Back to Blind, one Slim Chance and switch Slim Chance in my heat. I just seen Cesar doing a pretty big Mega Loop 3 with some others tricks. I come back to the shore not really confident, I know that the decision will be close… And I don’t know how the judges will count his trick.
And, unfortunately, it’s a 3-2 decision for Cesar Portas!
End of the competition for me at a 9th place! I’m pretty disappointed of this result…
To sum up, this event was really hard, I had not the right setting of riding. And had trouble to feel the strong and gusty wind even if I was really confident with my 2nd place on this event lat year. I will change and work on my settings, and I keep confident for the next PKRA event in Germany next week.
à bientôt
